I’m excited to share a recent success story in my investment journey, which highlights the power of strategic decision-making and patience. Back in November 2022, I made a bold move by investing in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) stock, and today, I’m reaping the rewards.

On November 21, 2022, I purchased 18 shares of TSMC at $79.51 each, totaling an investment of $1,431.15. At the time, I saw immense potential in TSMC due to its dominant position in the semiconductor industry and promising growth prospects.

Fast forward to today, I made a strategic decision to sell 10 of my TSMC shares at $142.44 each, generating a total of $1,424.40. This move allowed me to cash out a significant portion of my initial investment while still retaining ownership of 8 TSMC shares.

But here’s where it gets even better. Throughout my holding period, I received dividends totaling $40, further bolstering my returns.

What’s truly remarkable is that with the proceeds from selling 10 shares and the dividends received, I have now fully recovered all my invested funds in TSMC stock. And to top it off, I still have 8 TSMC shares in my portfolio that are essentially free.

This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without my “free stocks” strategy, which involves strategically selling portions of my investments to recover initial capital while still maintaining exposure to potential future gains.

Investing in stocks, especially with a long-term perspective, requires patience, discipline, and a well-thought-out strategy. My success with TSMC stock serves as a testament to the effectiveness of this approach.

As I continue on my investment journey, I’m excited to explore further opportunities and strategies that will help me achieve my financial goals. And with TSMC continuing to innovate and excel in the semiconductor industry, I’m optimistic about the future growth potential of my remaining shares.

Remember, success in investing is not just about making the right decisions—it’s also about staying disciplined and adaptable in the face of market fluctuations. Here’s to more successes in the future!

What are “top line” and “bottom line” for companies and stocks? April 27, 2012

What do bottom-line and top-line mean for stocks and companies?

The answer is simple: “TOP-LINE” means REVENUES and “BOTTOM-LINE” means EARNINGS: this graph below is a good and clear example:

Top line shows revenue and bottom line shows earningns for EBIX

Top line shows revenue and bottom line shows earningns for EBIX

The graph also helps me to understand why Revenue is called TOP LINE and Earnings BOTTOM LINE:

Since Earnings = Revenue – Expenses, then Earnings are smaller (less dollars) than Revenues. On a graph showing dollars over time, Revenues will always be the top line and Earnings the bottom line.

After exchanging a few ideas with Andrew about which kind of risk I like to take, I decided to actually take  risk for my September stock pick.

Chinese growing business community will need to travel and sleep out. So I chose HMIN, a large chain of economy hotels in China. This was my order on Etrade:

Thu Sep 30 11:55:36 2010 Buy 30 HMIN Executed @ $49.13

not very inviting Hotel by our standards, probably extremely cheap

What made me chose this hotel chain are its good growth numbers:

Qtrly Revenue Growth (yoy): 25.70%

Qtrly Earnings Growth (yoy): 35.30%

5 Reasons why I am buying convertible ETF SPDR Barclays Capital Convertible Bond ETF (CWB) February 3, 2010

Convertible Bonds are great

Convertible Bonds are Bonds that take advantage of stock performance

1) Convertible Bonds seem great:

  • they guarantee returns like Bonds,
  • they also offer opportunity to take advantage of stock market growth
  • they should be quite safe, because at the end of their lifetime they can give the capital back if stockprice is below convert price

2) SPDR Barclays Capital Convertible Bond ETF (CWB) offers a nice yield:  it pays  monthly $0.072 which makes  yearly $0.864 representing 2.3% of its $37 current price.

3) Expenses for this ETF are 0.4%, which  is not too much, even though usually ETF charge less

4) CWB is defensive as compared to stocks. It tracks the S&P 500 but with less volatility and with much less downswing

5) last but not least, CWB is the only ETF for  convertible Bonds, so I don’t have much choice.

3SBio is a Chinese Biotech company.

I bought 110 SSRX shares on Aug 1 2008 for $9.15 each. I spent a total amount of $1001.5

Today I sold 77  SSRX shares @ $13.21. I made a total amount of $ 1017.17.

I am $11 richer and I do own 33  free  SSRX shares, which hopefully one day will make me rich, thanks to my free stocks strategy.

I’m buying $1000 worth of Blackstone (BX) in 5 minutes November 19, 2009

Blackstone is a huge Private Equity fund.

Private Equity… or PIRATE EQUITY?

They manage more than $ 90 Billion. Hopefully they manage that sum well. The company earns managements fees even if the value of assets they manage gos down. Forward P/E ratio is a reasonable 15. Main reasons why I buy BX is the fact the middlemen usually gain even if things go badly, the fact that if things go well they gain even more. Last but not least:

  • Huge dividend yield: 8%
  • Grrowing dividend yield: last year was just 6%

Growing dividends in a sinking economy looks nice. I bet that Blackstone’s managing fees will go up if the Economy continues it current recovery.
